Larry Johnson aka Grandmama

There is game. And there is theatrics. Then there is game with theatrics. Larry Demetric Johnson had both. Some would argue to his detriment. Nonetheless, “LJ” enjoyed a sterling college career. Unfortunately, due to an assortment of nagging injuries, his professional career never reached the same acclaim. But for those who had the privilege to witness the tenacity with which he played, there is no question that with a lot better health, and a little less initialism, he may have achieved a more noteworthy NBA career.

Ming Yao

… the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. – Ecclesiastes 9:11

Ming Yao was born to Zhiyuan Yao and Fengdi Fang.  His birth weight was 11 pounds, twice the average size in China.  At the age of seven, Ming developed a sickness that cost him his hearing in his left ear.

Ming began playing basketball at age nine, attending junior sports school at the time.  Coincidentally, his mother, Fengdi (6′3″), was the captain of China’s women’s national team that won the first Asian Championship in 1976.  One year later, when Ming was examined by doctors at age ten, he was predicted to grow to the height of 7′3″.  At the time, he was already 5 feet tall.  By age thirteen he had reached his father’s height at 6′7″.

BALL IN …

Now that the trade deadline has come and gone, with more big name player movement than we’ve seen in a decade, how ’bout we handicap the coach’s race to the title.  However, before we do, please allow me to do a little housecleaning first.

A crestfallen Dwyane Wade can only hope for a better 2008-09 seasonMany of you may be wondering how Dwyane Wade still rides so high on MeanD’s Big Board and the answer is simple: He deserves to be there.  Wade is an all-world baller, no matter how badly his team is performing.  Several weeks ago I reported that ESPN analyst Mark Jackson laid the blame for Miami’s poor record on player effort.  Although I begged to differ, I did not challenge the league’s No. 2 all-time assists leader.  However, during Detroit’s absolute shellacking of Phoenix yesterday, Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy revisited Miami’s poor performance, with Jackson conceding that he now believes there is something other than poor effort going on in Miami — which brings us to an assertion I made months ago.  Miami is draft hunting.  Therefore, I won’t penalize Wade, just as I did not penalize Kobe, for administrative decisions made above and beyond his control.  Not coincidentally, during last Thursday’s TNT halftime show, Charles Barkley also laid the blame for Miami’s abysmal record on the organization’s decision to seek the draft.
