Leon Powe got inside the Lakers porous defense all night en route to his career night in Game 2 of the NBA Finals at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Mss.

Few coaches can gameplan with Phil Jackson. After all, when PJ pencils in what he expects to get from the opposition, rarely is he surprised.  Too bad yesterday wasn’t his birthday because Leon Powe delivered the mother of all surprises, scoring 21 points off the bench on 6-7 shooting in only 15 minutes of play. Powe also tossed in nine free throws on 13 attempts from the charity stripe.

The result: the Celtics lead the Lakers 2-0 ahead of the cautious 3-game Lakers homestand that awaits them starting Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Paul Pierce, who showed few effects of the sprained right knee that has dominated headlines between games scored 28 points, helping the Celtics hold off a furious late game surge by Los Angeles en route to a 108-102 win Sunday night in Game 2 of the Finals.

“We’re happy because we won, but we definitely learned a lesson,” Pierce said.

The Lakers trailed 95-71 with less than 8 minutes to go, but went on an improbable 31-9 run to pull to 104-102 on two free throws by Kobe Bryant with 38.4 seconds left.  But Pierce made two free throws, then blocked a Sasha Vujacic 3-pointer, and James Posey made two free throws of his own with 12.6 seconds left to seal the victory for Boston.

But the story of the game was the Celtics’ aggressiveness from start to finish, which led to a huge disparity in free throw attempts, with Boston going 27-for-38 from the foul line, while the Lakers went just 10-for-10.

Said Bryant when asked about the free throw disparity, “I didn’t notice”, cracking a sarcastic smile.

But again, Boston’s Big Three — Pierce, Ray Allen (17 points) and Kevin Garnett (17) — were the ringleaders, with Powe, a second-year reserve, adding a career-high in points after being profiled during halftime in a poignant and sobering perspective that detailed his hard-knock road to the NBA.

Powe, who played a total of 68 seconds during one stretch of 13 games during the season, scored six points to close a 15-2 run ending the third quarter that gave the Celtics a 22-point lead.  His performance left the Lakers reeling.  In fact, at one point in the fourth quarter, Boston fans discarded chants of “Beat L.A.”, instead opting for a chorus of “Le-on Powe!”

“He was terrific,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Rajon Rondo also played well, dishing a career-high 16 assists, while KG added 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who will need more of the same if they hope to avoid a three-game sweep in Los Angeles starting Tuesday night.

As for Bryant, who appeared poised after his team’s less than stellar performance in Game 1, he scored 30 points (13 in the fourth) on 11-of-23 shooting.  But In four losses against Boston this season, Kobe is a paltry 35-of-93 from the field and finding it more and more difficult to find the seams in the Celtics stifling defense.  However, if the Lakers shots start falling in Game 3, Bryant should return to his previous MVP form.

Pau Gasol finally awoke from his slumber, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Lakers, but seemed visibly shaken after being knocked to the floor with no foul call coming late in the fourth quarter.

Perhaps that’s when reality set in?

Nonetheless, Bryant, buoyed by some dead eye Lakers’ shooting in the games final seven minutes, did everything he could to get the Lakers untracked.  And he nearly pulled it off.

Kobe’s 3-pointer made it 102-91.  After which, he slinked his way through the seams of the Celtics defense for two quick buckets that pulled the Lakers to 104-95. The Celtics, on the other hand, became lackadaisical, believing they had the game won.

In the end, however, they displayed just enough gumption to get the victory.

After Vujacic hit a 3-pointer, Vladimir Radmanovic made a steal and dunk to make it 104-100 and Celtics fans, who were confident of victory only moments earlier, began to fear the worst.

Bryant then sank two more free throws, which closed the gap to 104-102, before Pierce darted through the lane getting fouled by Derek Fisher.  Pierce nailed both foul shots then tipped Vujacic’s 3-point shot from the left wing with 14 seconds left. Posey was also fouled on the play, knocking down two free throws of his own. After which, the Lakers drove the ball up-court, but missed their next two shots as the final buzzer sounded and a collective sigh of relief rushed through the aisles of TD Banknorth Garden, with the stunned realization that their Celtics are only two victories away from their first NBA title in over 20 years.

“We’re not settling on a 2-0 lead,” Garnett said. “We want to go out there and win two games in L.A.”

As a testament to their great ball movement and team-oriented game, the Celtics had an astonishing 31 assists on 36 FG attempts, while the Lakers managed a not too shabby 20 assists on 41 FG attempts.

 NBA

Terry PorterAs expected, the Phoenix Suns have hired Terry Porter as their new head coach. Porter, most recently a Pistons’ assistant, also has head coaching experience in the league. He coached the Bucks for two seasons (‘03-’05), leading them to the playoffs his first season there. In his second season in Milwaukee, he lost starting point guard T.J. Ford for the season to an injury, and was fired – perhaps unjustly – after the Bucks limped to a 30-52 record.

Under the circumstances, given the fact that the Phoenix front office seems to be intent on making another run with their current makeup, the chips are stacked against them and Porter, and only a significant trade and/or astute draft will help them enough. But Porter does seem to bring a good mix of potent offense and defensive-minded game plans, so if and when he’s able to mold the team to his liking, he’s got a good chance to return them to contenders if two factors are present. He’s given ample time, as he signed just a three year deal, and if he gets cooperation from an owner (in)famous for his salary cap driven moves. The immediate future looks uncertain at best for Suns fans.

93 Responses to “LOTL: Powe-Dunk’d in Beantown”

I left the bar I was watching the game from with the Celtics up 20. I get home and see the final, and I was shocked…

Leon Powe will never buy another beer in Boston again!

Picked a great time for the game of his life, no doubt, but all he really did was play within himself. He ran the floor and kept his head up, and the Lakers decided to practice some sort of reverse psychology style of defense.

Powe dunk’d? Clever, veryyyyyy clever.

I hope that LA can get back into this series… a six or seven gamer would be fun.

C’mon LA and Boston, give us something like that Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. That was exciting stuff…

I want to see LA get two of the three in Staples just so Boston can wrap it up in the Garden. That would be bananas. Can you say riot???

As I stated in Dirt Dog, Big Brown left a big brown on the backstretch along with a good pile of my money smoldering in the stench. That stench then floated over to Boston and reappeared as the officiating call of game two of the playoffs. Both Kobe and Odom (80%) of their offense sitting on the bench in the first quarter with two fouls each. Little used Powe of the Celtic’s in 15 minutes of play, has more free throw attempts than the entire Laker’s team. Analyse the game any way you want. The ref’s had this one in a foregone conclusion. As good as everybody said they were in game one, they were equally as bad in game 2.

Very catchy title. I like, I like.

That game was pretty intense. I thought the game was a fait de complete (sp). That just goes to show that the Celtics cannot sleep on the Lakers. That have to keep pounding them into the pavement and not let up. Beat ‘em like they stole something.

Whoda thunk that Leon Powe would play outta his mind last night? I loved it. Lakers bench players had better take notes. That kinda play wins championships. He was spectacular. He commanded the floor. Good job Powe. Touching story about his road to the NBA.

I wish the Lakers and company would stop whining about the disparity in free throws. Some of the Lakers said it themselves, as well as some of the LA sportscasters, that they they didn’t drive the lane or play defense. DUHHHHH!!! That’s why you didn’t get to the line. Stop your complaining and man up.

People really need to stop raggin’ on Paul Pierce and his injury. FAKING?? C’mon. What reason, at that point, did he need to fake an injury? It wasn’t a must win game for Celtics. They game was pretty even. The Celtics weren’t playing bad. So, I don’t get why he would fake an injury. Give it up people, you’re making excuses.

Great job. Enjoyable read as always.

GO GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not sure if i’m using this term right, but did lakers get “POWNED”?

couple thoughts:

celtics had a chance to demoralize the lakers by killing them last night.

instead, they gave them hope and a 4th quarter demonstration of the celtics’ inability to defend the side pick and roll.

odd how jackson abandoned the triangle, huh?

trevor ariza needs more PT.

what about the free-throw discrepancy?

will we finally see the mamba?

lastly, boston better be scared, coz kobe’s gonna go ape@##$&! on em in lala land.

so much for now, i’m on the run!

MeanDovine
Rick O

All that could’ve gone wrong for the Lakers went wrong for ‘em. And let’s not excuse the fact that the refs in their own benevolent way also had a part to play in all of this.

I’ve not seen this sort of disparity shown since they were counting the election ballots down here in Florida in 2000 . Please tell me that the level of inconsistency being shown won’t rear its ugly head once again when this series resumes in L A? Or am I alone in believing that there might be some sort of conspiracy here to ensnare the fans> So that the culmination of this series can be an emotional one.

I think also Jackson should be asking the guys on his bench if they think that they’re on vacation ? And we ought to be looking into the fact if whether or not Odom wants to join the circus or become a magician’s assistant. Either that or he’s now become part of the Federal Witness Protection Program .

I watched The Belmont Stakes and boy what a letdown for the fans. Dutrow as the trainer of Big Brown has a hell of a lot of questions to be answered. That schmuck had better come up with the right answers as well.

If the horse was ill prepared to run then why the hell run it? Now the horse has an alleged respiratory problem and it was coughing up blood on its return to the stables. That tells me that the horse may well have been doped up and not in a fit state. Or the mere fact that on the day he just wasn’t good enough.

Either way, there are some who’ve made out like bandits and unfortunately I wasn’t one of ‘em.

tophatal …………

“Lakers bench players had better take notes. That kinda play wins championships. He was spectacular. He commanded the floor.”

That’s all that needs to be said.

Powe showed heart and determination.

Lakers are soft.

I told you guys they had no answers for the celtics in the post without bynum.

Archive that chumps.

This series will NOT make it back to boston.

Ray Allen hoisting that trophy in kobe’s gym will be the ULTIMATE “kiss my BLACK ass punk” move.

And if the celts win the title in LA….the franchise could sink.

Fast.

Just a thought.

Lefty,

Despite all of the Lakers rancor over foul shooting, they have no excuse for allowing Leon Powe to look like the Celtic’s second offensive option. The fact is, each and every game the Celtics have had someone step up by making a sizable contribution, be it a bench player or a regular. It has been their story all season.

I’d be surprised if the series didn’t go back to Boston 3-2 … whose favor I can’t call.

Holler back, Lefty!

KP,

So glad to see you, my good friend!

Thanks for recognizing the catchy title.

And don’t worry, unless the Lakers suffer a devastating injury, or a monumental collapse, this series will go at least 6 games, and more probably seven.

Pump,

Any idiot can see why you or anyone else would be disgruntled over the free throw disparity in Game 2, but the fact is, the Celtics are scoring like the team that has the high-powered offense, while the Lakers and their triangle is looking, well, offensive.

Again, defense wins titles. If the Lakers hope to bounce back they had better learn to play some.

Thanks for making a contribution this morning despite your feelings.

:)

Miz. B.,

Really can’t add much to your very succinct comments. Well stated …

The momentum of the series will shift after Game 3 in L.A. Still, as long as Boston continues to hang its hat on defense, the Celtics will come out on top in the end.

Leon Powe was a man child wasn’t he?

kd,

POWNED …

I like!

I wish the Celtics had demoralized the Lakeshow, but perhaps it’s best they didn’t. No sense adding fuel to an already blazing fire. Now, instead of the Lakers being doubly motivated, they’re only motivated. Should allow the Celtics to overcome the opening minutes of Game 3’s Lakers onslaught.

Kobe will look to be more aggressive, and will certainly get more than his fair share of free throw attempts as a result. But don’t sleep on the fact that the Celtics have a bevy of defenders to throw at him. So getting open looks will continue to be a problem.

MAMBA!!!!!!

Here ah is …

Here ah is …

LOL!

Top,

Disgruntlement over the apparent free throws is understandable, but the fact is, the Celtics are having an easier time getting what they want against the Lakers than they did against the Pistons. To the Cs, the Lakers defense is like playing a pickup game at Club Med.

As for bench production, the Celtics have the better bench. Sure the Lakers have some great offensive firepower, but in the Finals you gotta guard somebody first.

As for Big Brown, I knew that horse wouldn’t run well after the cracked hoof was discovered, as well as after the horses owners decided not to give him any steroids leading up to the race.

Suffice it to say, I didn’t fall for the okee-doke.

Holler back, top!

RIDGE,

As good as the Celtics look, you’ve got to temper your optimism.

Going into Staples to get a playoff victory is an entirely different animal. Although given the way the Lakers play defense I understand your enthusiasm.

Thus said, I’m not sure the Celtics won’t see Boston again in this series. Though possible, it is doubtful they’ll be able to maintain their composure when the ref’s whistles start blowing as favorably for the Lakers as it has been for them.

Still, it will be nice to see Ray, Paul and KG get rings, but they’ll have to earn them.

Great title! LMAO.

Great read as always, MeanDo and Ricko. I was a little dismayed at the FT discrepancy. I want to win w/o controversy or excuses. Kobe got two ticky-tac fouls in the first, so I don’t blame him for being miffed. But the thing I saw was that the Lakers were not driving in the paint, and that’s the reason for a lot of Lakers not getting the calls.

The refs, for all intents and purposes, did not spot the Lakeshow 24 points, and weak D.

very nice piece!

Mean im glad someone else realizes that the reason Big Brown didnt win was them not giving him his shot.

If it’s legal i have to assume all the other owners were doing it as well which makes their decision NOT to give it to him just plain stupid.

DUMB

MeanDovine

Am I missing something here however? I can’t understand that sort of disparity at all. I for one won’t say that there’s any collusion on the part of the NBA hierarchy. But when this sort of thing continually goes on during the postseason . It does leave a lot to be desired on the part of the officiating.

As to Dutrow and the ownership syndicate of Big Brown they’ll still be making money once the horse goes to stud. That being said it’s not worthwhile racing the horse again at this juncture.

Did you by any chance get to see Pavlik’s performance on Saturday night? I thought it was clinical and effective.

With Money now allegedly retiring for good . I’ll believe that once it’s written in stone ! I do believe that Oscar will try and lure Pavlik into a big money fight for all of the marbles.

That’s the only other out he’s got as I for one don’t believe that he’s got the stones to take on Miguel Cotto.

De La Hoya as a fighter now isn’t about his legacy but more about the big payday against guys that’ll draw the crowds and at the same time he wants be sure that he can definitely beat.

tophatal …………

About kobe’s second foul.

He and allen have a history and things were on the verge of getting chippy. It was stupid of bryant to be swinging his arm that hard at allen trying to get POST position 20 feet away from the basket. He deserved that foul.

And i dont see the FT situation changing much.

The exact same thing was happening against the spurs. When you shoot jumpers you dont get foul calls. And if your guys are shrinking in the paint you cant expect to get calls.

matter of fact, the way the spurs and celts are playing kobe just PROVES how right i was about George Karl’s RIDICULOUS “Put my power forward on kobe” strategy.

Didnt kobe shoot 15+ FT per game against the nuggets?

Hmmm.

Tophat, both pavlic and cotto (especially) would beat the brakes off of de la hoya at this point

And its sad to see floyd “retire” rather than face cotto, the only fighter with a shot of beating him right now.

Punk move, im gonna mark it on my permanent record for him.

Afternoon Lisa!

You’re dead on …

The Lakers were relegated to perimeter play by the Celtics tuff defense. Can’t get free throw attempts if you aint driving the lane.

As for Kobe and Ray-Ray, as RIDGE correctly points out above, they have a long history of bitterness toward one another. Plus, Ray has cachet so Kobe can’t get away with the stuff he’d get away with against lessor known opponents. I actually thought both calls against Kobe were good calls.

Thanks for the props on the catchy title, dear. Looking forward to our continued dialogue as the series turns to Los Angeles.

Holla!!!

Mean,

Fact is that the ref’s were calling L.A. fouls on both ends of the court keeping them out of sync no matter what they were attempting to do. Praise the Celtic’s all you want but a 38 to 10 differential with 17 added points from the line, keeping players off the floor, will make ANYBODY a winner, every time. Call it defense if you want, just like the no call with Gasol with less than 2 to play. Cut-n-dry. They were getting too close.

I’m not disgruntled. My rat-z-ass doesn’t care who wins this thing since my team isn’t in it. Just being a Sun’s fan, I’m more interested in a “fair, call it both ways” game. That didn’t happen last night. It was so obvious that all fans should question it.

Tophat,

You’re not missing anything at all. There is no rule that says free throw shooting was be balanced. If one team is driving the lane and the other isn’t then the team driving the lane will get more attempts. Plain and simple.

The Celtics defense has kept the Lakers living primarily on the perimeter. Still, the Lakers will look to be more aggressive in L.A. which should get them a few more calls.

As for Pavlik, yes, I caught the fight. He was impressive. I actually like the guy a lot.

It’s time for De La Hoya to become a full time promoter.

Again Pump,

Everyone is entitled to his opinion, so I can’t discredit yours.

The Lakers are not the better team in this series. They will get more than their fair share of free throw attempts in Los Angeles, and they are still gonna lose.

The Eastern Conference has always been the stronger conference defensively, while the West has always been about finesse and high scoring offense.

Evidence: Your Phoenix Suns.

The Celtics beat L.A. twice during the regular season, and handily I might add. They also handled all of the West’s big dogs all season long.

Boston is the better team because ‘they are’ the better team.

Why you pick the lakers then?

HOMER

Why did who pick the Lakers?

I picked the Celtics to win the series, and I announced it all over the Internet including Fantasy Shark, so you can’t be talkng to me.

Right?

mean,

Your point taken and yet the west has won more championships over the last 10 years than the east. As to the Celtic’s being the better team, maybe, but comparing an east division schedule to the west and what happened during the regular season is a paper assumption. There was what, an 8 game spread from top to bottom for playoff teams in the west while in the east there was what 20 games?

I think he was talking to me. Frankly I’m better off having the Celtic’s win because there are a lot more ex-California people living here than Boston-ites so I wouldn’t have to put up with their jabber. I did make a 50% homer pick for the western division if that’s important for some reason.

I seem to recall the Lakers being on the other end of some free throw disparity earlier this post-season. Karma sure is a fierce little bitch…

For the record…one of those trademark sarcastic Kobe smiles came immediately after an attempted flop. He flailed the arms even though slow-mo replay showed that nobody even touched him.

With him and Pierce on the court together, now that’s entertainment. If I wanted to watch terrible acting, I would just flip over to Spiderman 3.

Pump,

Re: West have won more titles over the past ten years.

… because things in sports tend to be cyclical.

See MLB and NFL.

But …

I have never made any bones that I am an NCF guy in football …

An Eastern Conference guy in basketball …

And a National League guy in MLB …

Etc.

Why? Defense.

When I did all of my homework, factoring in the regular season as well, I came up with the Celtics. Keep in mind that in my first year of doing BDG I did not miss one pick, through the regular season and the playoffs.

The game’s spread East versus West is irrelevant. It cannot be used to as a determinant in any way. Remember, the Miami Heat beat the Mavericks who were in what was purported to be a far superior Western conference.

Finally, as a Phil Jackson disciple, as well as a student of the game for the past 25 years, I’ve seen some great teams, Lakers and Celtics included.

This year’s Lakers team is very young. And Kobe is not a leader. He never has been, so I’m tired of the media trying to pass him off as one.

All second-half season long folks have been ranting about the unfairness of the Gasol trade. Now folks are ranting about the officiating, on the Lakers behalf?

Nonsense.

If the Lakers want to win the title, then they need to earn it, not get it like they got Gasol.

How in God’s name so many of you picked the Lakers to win the title is beyond me. They went on a great postseason run in the West, a conference not known for defense, save the Spurs and Utah.

Now they’re up against the best defensive team in the league this year.

Plus, the Celtics own the Lakers over their past ten meetings in the Finals, like 8-2.

Nonetheless, the Lakers will get their chances back in L.A. But if they go into Game 3 looking for retribution from the officials they are gonna lose.

Shooter,

You are the voice of reason. And a welcomed sight.

How are you, my friend?

“This year’s Lakers team is very young. And Kobe is not a leader. He never has been, so I’m tired of the media trying to pass him off as one.”

PRAISE GOD!!!

Funny i dont recall ANY of this coming out of your mouth previously and i swore you picked the lakers.

I have been wrong before in my life.

Once or twice,LOL ; )

Series is over folks.

Im looking sweep.

mean,

Does it really boil down to just a statical certainty? Is it really that simple? If so, why bother with post season play? Just kidding. I know that Las Vegas is still there. I know I lost a lot of money on Big Brown, Saturday. I’ll just reiterate my desire for the “fair, call it both ways” remark I made on my second post.

Hark, did I hear Mean D say that Kobe wasn’t a leader? Wow, somebody FINALLY agrees with the girl. You’re gonna see the old selfish Kobe rear his ugly little head these next games. Mark my words. He already has. Look for the Black Mamba (laughable) to take his teammates outta the game, turning it into the Kobe Show. He wasn’t slapping hands, pattin’ @$$ and bumping chest last night with any of his so called ‘brothers.’

Please people stop whining about the free throws. Hell, the Lakers came back and ALMOST won the game, disparity aside. They just couldn’t get it done, that’s all. Plain and simple.

RIDGE,

Naw, kid, click the “Remember These Titans” post, and read the comments as well.

MeanD picked the C’s.

Just wishful thinking on your part that I picked the Lakers … So if you’ve been blabbering all over Fantasy Shark that you’ve finally got ol’ MeanD beat, then you’ve got a lot of crow to eat, my brother.

To suggest this series has been a disappointment so far is an understatement. Clearly this isn’t the Lakers-Celtics from back in the day. If you look at the stats, the Lakers didn’t play badly and matched up well with the Celtics – statistically.

It’s the intangibles that are winning games for the Celtics and unless the Lakers can get even when the series shifts to L.A., this thing is over.

I’m MoonDog, and I approved this comment.

Dang, lots of things to respond to/comment on here. Haven’t had time to get to it, but y’all can bet I’ll hit ya up this evening.

LOL Mean D!!!

I already whipped your ass over there pretty good about the pistons.

Didnt need to say anything else after that lol

And LOL @ them thinking an inexperienced curry is an upgrade over saunders.

Dumars will be fired within 2 years.

And you know what i find funny Misbehaving?

The fact that the lakers got back into the game on 7 4th quarter three’s.

Shooting J’s not going to the bucket.

Same stuff they been doing.

Who gets consistant foul calls on outside jumpers?

They’re crying is laughable.

Mean are you sure you werent picking the lakers previously?

You not pulling a John Kerry are you?

RIDGE,

First off, the day you whip my ass is the day I officially retire.

Second, as for the Lakers being my pick, give it up ….

Just goes to show, you do more motor mouthing than you do reading.

So …

Read a book …

Read a book …

Read a mutha#$@!ing book!!!

No, MeanD never picked the Lakers. I did, though.

Methinks you may suffer from “S.M.S” Ridge. Also known as Selective Memory Syndrome. I kind of had a hunch before, but I’m getting more certain each passing comment, uh, I mean day.

LOL, Doggie!!!

Loved the comment, bro. But loved the realness even more.

Also, thanks for the extremely complimentary comment on our last post. Much appreciated.

YES!!!!!!!! ShooterB saw the same thing I did. Kobe had the ball in his hands, the ball slips out of his hands with NO ONE within a foot of him, and he windmills his arms to feign a reach-in foul. Instant replay shows nobody touched him. This is what I am talking about.

More stuff to chew on. The Lakers got 28 fouls, the Celtics 21. Can I assume by the disparity of FT (38-10) attempts then that most of the Celtics fouls on the Lakers weren’t during their act of shooting? Maybe that makes sense…the Celts were in the paint, the Lakers weren’t.

Lakers best hope Tues: Salvatore Bennett! :)

#45 The R

At this stage of my life I’d be able to kick de La Hoya’s ass. And I’m not just saying that because of my martial arts background.

Oscar is overrated and is about as useful to the sport as a piece of excrement is as about as useful to a sand fly.

And as to what we’re seeing unfold with the Lakers and Celtics are about two teams that aren’t necessarily evenly matched. But whom it can be said are trying to give us an entertaining series.

To an extent it’s not yet met the expectations of many by a long shot.

tophatal …….

See Lefty? That’s why you should never leave the bar. You always miss something interesting. Just remember to call a cab.

Since it’s been a hot topic, here is my take on the officials in game two: the first quarter was called atrociously, with the rest of the game called merely inconsistent. But the groundwork had been laid. As Mean has meantioned several times, for some reason there is a propensity from the officials to whistle key players with a couple quick fouls. I know the reason the Lakers lost was due to most of the same reasons as game one. Defense, bench play, and point guard play. But the early fouls did upset the natural course of the game. Not sure why it has to be that way in today’s NBA, but it does get frustrating. But again, the better team won in game two.

Thanks Miz B. Unfortunately, Pierce’s game one injury brought about much polarization. The comparisons to Willis Reed are ludicrous. As were the allegations that he was faking. At the time, it looked and I’m sure felt serious. That’s about all I have to say about that. Now, on to the shrimpin’ business . . .

kdjs-I said the same thing about Farmar regarding playing time after game one. At this point in his career, Fisher is more effective in spot duty, whether that means starting or coming off the bench. Twenty to 25 minutes is about his limit, and would improve his game on both ends.

tophat-I didn’t have a good feeling about Big Brown. So I bet a ton on a horse called FedEx. I haven’t heard back from my bookie, so I assume I lost. Dang. Next year, I’m going with The Mailman.

I’m not holding Odom accountable as much as Kobe and Pau. Everyone knows Lamar is a perfect third option. When the first two stink up the joint, it’s not going to end well. I know Kobe wound up with a good scoring night in game two, and Gasol’s stats were good as well, any fan watching can tell that they were not a consistent, positive factor. Your move, Phil.

Ridge-Yeah, you probably did tell us that w/o Bynum, the Celtics would dominate inside. You also told us that the Suns were pursuing Allan Houston. You may very well have mentioned the Bynum statement, but when you back it up with statements like the one about Allan Houston, what good is it?

BTW, I’m thinking about this as a future headline:

“This series will NOT make it back to boston.”

Here’s a tip, Ridge. Enjoy your predictions, but in moderation.

“Punk move, im gonna mark it on my permanent record for him.”

Speaking of punk moves, why you criticizing Floyd for retiring, Ridge?

Come on, dude.

MoonDog-No, this series isn’t the Lakers/Celtics of the ’80s. Thankfully, I never thought such a thing, although so many media types tried to tell me it was. I know better.

Shooter and Lisa-I saw that Kobe complaint after he fumbled the ball. My first thought, ” . . . and THAT’S why some people can’t stand Kobe.”

Unfortunately, in today’s world, the media and certain jock sniffers build someone up so much that they (the athlete) get spoiled. I have to really stretch to imagine Jerry West or Moses Malone doing such a thing. Of course the worst thing is that I picked the Lakers. And I’m s’posed to root for them after that pathetic display? Oh well, at least I get to look forward to the LA crowd chanting “Big Baby,” though a friend said they are actually chanting “MVP.” Of course, I didn’t believe him.

Mean-LOVED your ‘cut and paste’ comment!

SSSFTSMSR

{See some specialist for that selective memory syndrome, Ridge}.

Can’t let Leon Powe go Kevin McHale on you.

I checked in with the score 91-71 and as I watched I could not believe what was happening. Could that be something LA can build upon or do they lack balls? We’ll find out.

I can tell everyone that Mean told me Boston was going to handle LA. I respected his view, though I was not a believer. I said L.A. in 6. Unless Boston goes 2006 Mavericks on us I doubt that will happen.

As for Phoenix, they have enough to win. What they don’t have is depth and THAT is something you build over the course of a season. If you refuse to play more than 8 players consistently all season you will get rolled in the playoffs. Phoenix would never get a Leon Powe performance because they rotate the same 7 guys in the post-season.

They have 1 more run in them and then they are probably done.

“I think it is a championship-caliber team,” said Porter

OPINIONS PLEASE?!?

Shaq looked real slim and trim in that jockey suit the other day.

Too bad he wont look like that in september :)

Rick, you telling me that floyd even CONSIDERING fighting de la hoya again before fighting cotto and then retiring before facing cotto isnt a punk move? When any true boxing fan KNOWS he’s the sole competition and could possibly beat him?

Now i can see you’re just looking for shit to argue and try to make the kid look bad.

We see you buddy…

*BRUSHES DIRT OFF SHOULDER*

Is it me or is it mostly basketball and the NBA where a team can be up BIG with 8 minutes left and barely pull off the victory in the final seconds…CONSISTENTLY…and mostly in the playoffs? I know teams melt down at times when they get big leads but what happens in the NBA seems to be that the quality of play and intelligence of the team who has dominated and built such a huge lead for three periods of play…all of a sudden turn into playground ballers. And the consistency of the officiating is always an issue in this game. Passes go crazy…shot selection is unbelievable and inevitably…the team who hasn’t been to the line all night begins to make a regular parade to it…or the team with the huge lead all of a sudden starts taking offensive fouls for the rest of the game. I know it happens in other sports but it doesn’t happen as CONSISTENTLY as it does in the NBA. Seems to me the close finish after most people have turned off their sets now has re-upped any lacking interest in the finals. Those whose sets went off…will no doubt have them back on tonight. Conspiracy theory? I think conspiracies are involved when something out of the ordinary happens rarely or every once in a while. This seems to be a common occurance in the NBA therefore negating a conspiracy theory. Let’s just call it BUSINESS! Now…Powe having a huge night while being profiled at halftime…coincidence or a good directorial call? I am enjoying the work you guys are doing here. I’ve commented more on basketball here than I ever did at the other site. Could be the MeanD/Ricko combination, eh! Unless I miss my guess…the Lakers will dominate the Celtics tonight…setting up further interest for the rest of the Finals. Homer be proud!!!

No Ridge, what I’m telling you is that if Mayweather wants to retire, why should he be criticized for it? I’m no longer an avid boxing fan, just casual. So there’s no doubt you probably know the situation better than I do. But I can still spot a hater when I see one.

Two more points before I go; First, I’m not the one who’s looking for things to argue about (how many times have you brought up the Suns, for example?), and second, it isn’t necessary for me to try to make you look bad.

gcoach! Good to see you stop by again. Thanks for the kudos to Mean and myself. But what are you saying about the NBA? Sounds like you’re a little skeptical with an active imagination, if you ask me. { ;) }

I’ve seen way too many finals series take unexpected turns to say anything other than the Celtics held serve at home, although I did expect LA to grab a game there. But there’s no doubt the officials are influenced by the home crowd in basketball, with them being so close to the action. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lakers have a decided free throw edge tonight, but as Mean has said many times, if they don’t step up there D, it may not matter. I look for LA to win two of three at home.

Don’t be a stranger. Always a pleasure.

“But I can still spot a hater when I see one.”

Must be an awful lot of broken mirrors around your pad rick.

But since you’re misinformed, allow me to retort.

He’s been ducking cotto for 2 years.

Punk move to retire without really fighting your #1 contender.

And neither De la Hoya or Ricky Hatton were it.

But he can retire all he wants i aint mad.

A little jealous, maybe, but definately not mad :)

Okay, thanks for the boxing info. I stand corrected, if need be.

I won’t bother responding to your broken mirror comment. I’m getting to old to spin my wheels in counterproductive endeavors.

Ridge
I think that you’re missing the point with fighters of the caliber of Mayweather and de La Hoya as they’re no longer interested in fighting with regard to their legacies. It’s now merely about the money and not much else.

Cotto can now be left to clean up the division from welterweight on up if he so chooses. If a guy chooses to walk away at this point in his career then so be it. But more likely than not for Money he’ll be back within the blink of an eye if the money is right.

He’s beaten all contenders and in doing so his legacy is there for all to see. Cotto’s has yet to be written. I doubt that de La Hoya at this juncture would even want a piece of him either !

tophatal ………

LOL @ Floyd not getting paid to fight cotto, also a champion and a major draw in the hispanic community.

You can make all the excuses you want, dude ducking him on some punk shit.

And i dont even care for cotto all that much.

Still cant forgive him for almost getting KO’ed by Chop Chop Corley (lol) @ home in puerto rico.

But the fact is he’s been the best fighter not named mayweather in that general weight class for the past 3 years.

Why havent they fought yet again?

*SNIFFS AIR*

*SMELLS TUNA*

Ridge
It’s obvious what knowledge you have of the sport you don’t seem to be aware as to who also controls the purse strings. It’s not only about the fighters but also the governing bodies.

If there’s a desire to make it happen then it will. But at this juncture which promoter out do you know that’ll be willing top make it happen ?

Come on name one if you’re that sure that it ought to happen ?

tophatal ……..

#45 The R
It’s a punk move if we the fans feel short changed by it all. And at this juncture I personally don’t give a damn.
What’s apparent however is that one way or another he’ll return to the ring.

The one guy who I respected when he chose to walk away was Marvin Hagler. And that was merely because I felt that he was cheated out of a verdict by a very myopic bunch of judges who wanted Leonard to be the next big thing on the block .

Sadly though throughout much of his career he was never ever truly able to live that night down or get over what was perpetrated by the judges and Bob Arum alike.

tophatal ………..

TOPHAT, what promoter in his right mind that isnt playing some boxing politics wouldn’t want…wait. Nevermind.

That’s why no one really cares about boxing.

Its sad.

And there was a bigger victim than hagler my friend.

Larry Holmes.

Who twice handily defeated spinks.

But the point was floyd ducked cotto.

Not sure how/why you’re trying to argue the point.

C’mon now.

Ridge

The point is a guy can walk away from a sport anytime he feels. Does it make him less of a man overall?

And are you’re emphatically sure at this juncture that Cotto can really beat “Money” Mayweather or is that just your emotions telling you this?

Both are extremely talented fighters. But we’ve now got the alphabet soup organizations and it’d appear than any as*s wipe who can lace up a glove can actually end up being a champion nowadays.

Personally I long for the days when the champions really did take on allcomers instead of laying claim that they’re the best out there.

Hence you’ve got an over the hill Antonio Tarver looking to get his as*s carved up by my boy and fellow British stalwart Joe Cazalghe . If anything he should stick with what he knows and that’s taking on the likes of Stallone on film. Rocky Balboa was so damn cheesy!

I’ve a post up within the Fox forum on Holmes’ enshrinement into the Int’l Boxing Hall of Fame of which you’re quite welcomed to take a look and tell me what you think as to the merits of the piece?

A link’ll provided for you to view it. I’ll look forward to reading your comments as and when you’re ready.

2008/06/06/Larry Is In But It Could’ve Been So Much More!

tophatal ………….

In all honesty, all analysis aside, bandwagon-fanism on full throttle, I’ll start rooting for the celtics.

Let me say again, gasol became a wide-eyed rookie once they beat the nuggets. Watch him play with more confidence when bynum is back to take up the space downlow that pau CAN’T.

Plus, it would be real nice to see KG get his chip before the lakers mature, both individually (farmar, sasha, ariza, BYNUM) as well as a team.

If u think this year was tough in the west, wait till next season.

I can’t wait already!

Lastly, who else here is having withdrawal symptoms?

Final Score Predicts?

Imma say: L.A. 96, Boston 89

Oooh, can I play? Okay, here goes.

LA 102 1/2, Boston 94. You’ll just have to trust me on this one . . .

Sincerely,

Tim Donaghy.

LOL!

Good one, Rick!

Damn. Rick got jokes. See ya’ll after the game.

Side bet:

Garnett and Allen with 2 fouls each before second quarter.

Shasa goes for 20.

Walton forgets to put on eye make-up.

Jack trips a ref after a bad call.

Diane re-enacts Morgana and plants a pair of red lips on Joey Crawfords forehead.

Mr. Donaghy,
The line at Bally’s is 196 so your saying take the over?

How nice would it have been if Newman would have blasted his third last night. Too many E’s cost them the game.

Donaghy:

“Refs fixed playoff series, other games”

The Tim Donaghy scandal just got more serious.

The disgraced former NBA referee told authorities in a four-page letter released Tuesday that two officials conspired to fix the outcome of a 2002 playoff series among other games.

Court documents filed by Donaghy’s lawyer detailed the “inner-workings” of a plot in which top league executives used referees to manipulate the games. Donaghy claims two referees were “company men” whose job was to extend a playoff series in 2002 to a seventh game.

The documents did not name the series, but the Lakers-Kings Western Conference finals was the only series in 2002 that went to a seventh game, with the Lakers winning Game 6, 106-102.

The report said the referees allegedly ignored flagrant fouls committed by the team that needed to win and called phantom fouls against the other team which led to two of their players fouling out. The team supposedly favored by the refs won Games 6 and 7 to win the series, according to the allegations.

“Our big guys get 20 fouls tonight and Shaq gets four? You tell me how the game went,” Kings coach Rick Adelman said after Game 6 of that series. “It’s just the way it is. Obviously, they got the game called the way they wanted to get it called.”

The letter doesn’t name anyone involved. Donaghy’s attorney and prosecutors have declined to comment. The league has denied the scandal goes beyond Donaghy and two co-defendants.

According to the document, Donaghy also said “league officials would tell referees that they should withhold calling technical fouls on certain star players because doing so hurt ticket sales and television ratings.”

Donaghy also said refs broke league rules by routinely fraternizing with players, coaches and team management and that the resulting inappropriate relationships may have influenced the outcomes of games. He claims one general manager in 2004 made a game-day phone call to referees to encourage them to call more personal fouls against an opponent.

Donaghy claims referees have accepted autographs, merchandise and meals from team representatives. He said one official used a team’s facility to exercise and another played tennis with an NBA coach.

The veteran referee pleaded guilty last year to felony charges alleging he took cash payoffs from gamblers and bet on games. He faces up to 33 months in prison.

John Lauro, Donaghy’s lawyer, filed the letter to a federal judge because none of the information was included in the government’s letter to the judge seeking leniency for Donaghy when he is sentenced, according to the New York Daily News.

The report said Lauro withheld the names of those involved because the feds might investigate the situation.

The Associated Press and SportsTicker contributed to this report.

Mean Dovine

This is the gift that just keeps on ticking and giving. And we’re still suppose to believe that Stern doesn’t want this all neatly dealt with behind closed doors ?

Whether or not the veracity of this can be proven remains to be seen. But I wouldn’t doubt that Donaghy is using this as leverage. But at the same time should the Feds come up with something then Stern’ll have some real explaining to do.

Ah Mr Stern your carriage awaits you sir .
You’re indeed late for the ball.

tophatal ………..

Rick O to David Stern; Shut the hell up. Your credibility is akin to what I stepped in while cleaning up my canine’s feces earlier today. Methinks you are a rogue, isolated commissioner.

How do you like them new, unapproved, rubber basketballs/apples.

And you had the unmitigated gall to try to convince us in your spiels about player appearance and supposed crackdown on players complaining to the officials.

You disgust me.

wasap eryody –

Liked the game tonight. Should have tempered my final score prediction to reflect the anticipation of the, uh, anticipation of the referees in light of everything. We all knew the Lakers and more so Kobe would be more aggressive this game. We knew this would lead to more shots from ft for LA. Phil’s speech does not hurt this scenario.

The key observations to be made as far as I am concerned are these:

1: Pau Gasol has always been a more aggressive player on his home court throughout his career. The fact that he is a neophyte to deep playoff runs and thusly ineffective in Games 1-2 has been somewhat neglected by the mainstream media because of his all-star status and the fact that LA was simply dynamite in the reg. season since getting him for Kwame. His performance around the rim tonight, as encouraging for LA fans as it may be, will surely continue for the next two games but will be INHERENTLY more important when the series goes back to Boston. He’s now dipped his toe in the big dog pool. Will he say “F*ck it” and jump in when back in the Garden? The Lakers’ entire hopes may well rest in his Spaniard hands.

2: Getting Kevin involved early may NOT be the best scenario for Boston on the road. He will always be there for putbacks and turnaround jumpers late in the shot clock at ANY point in the game, but I am thinking Boston may be better served by getting everyone else who is a legit scoring concern involved as much as possible before looking to #5.

Though tonight’s final score may bely it, I think every game at Staples is going to be a shootout in one form or the other and the Celtics’ scorers who need their # called to fill it up take importance over KG – who can simply dunk or lay in when dumped off to.

In Games 1-2, Rondo looked brilliant dumping off to PJ Brown/Powe at times just because there was nothing else working and something had to come of it.

Granted, Rondo was able to penetrate, probe and create wherever he chose at times, but my point is that the strengths of the C’s scoring ways look to be the fact that they can pull something out of nothing when forced to. This leads me to think they should try more slow-down, set-up plays for their wing scorers throughout the first half of Games 4-5 and wait until the suitable scenario to let Rondo “Play Hoops” as the Warriors would say. (Where are they?)

3: Kobe was fine tonight, but there’s obviously still a different level he will have to aspire to if HIS LAKERS (Yes, it’s HIS LAKERS) are going to win a game in Boston. Maybe he’s working up to it?

At any rate, we’ve now at least got a series. Thankfully the Boston homers will STFU for a minute and acknowledge the fact the LA is still quite dangerous. (*cough, RIDGE, cough*)

Lefty,

You are sugarcoating a win the Lakers were fortunate to get. KG and Pierce both had off nights, very off, and the Celtics still almost pulled it out.

As for Pau, he’s important, but Lamar Odom is far more crucial to the Lakers quest for a title this year.

Not much more to say ’til tomorrow morning, bro.

Whatever, Mean.

L.A. will win at least one of the next two and Boston will go home and clinch in the Garden. That’s the way it will be. Any writing by anybody until then is just sugarcoating, so why you runnin’ this here???

Just Kidding, but Why you gotta call me out when Im trying to sound cool?

LOL.

LOL!

Got nothin’ but love for you , bro.

You got me laughing my ass off right now.

Still, I’m pissed because Pierce sucked so badly tonight.

:)

Great, great comments Lefty. You sure you’re not a righty?

Mean-I heard the same from Laker fans after game one, meaning how Kobe and Pau played so-so and they still almost won.

Man, I’ll be glad when this season ends. Getting tired of this impartial stuff. Did I really pick the Lakers?

Let’s ask Ridge, maybe he (mis)remembers.

Perhaps, Ricko, but the difference is, “I’m me, and I have spoken.”

The Lakers were fortunate to get out of Game 3 with the victory.

Boston is the far superior team.

Hey Ricko,

Give Stern a break. After all, he said he hasn’t read the letter yet.
Right? (wink, wink)

What a defensive struggle last night. Neither team was able to shoot better than 35% for the game. It was defense, right mean? (easy on your response bro, I have a tub full of water balloons here)

hehehehe …

Pumpdude

Stern may well be seen as the guy who in accord with MJ saved the game. But as it now stands the state of the game is somewhat in a mess.

Especially when these allegations are now out there. And Stern himself has implicitly stood by many of these officials. Even when they’ve been at fault. He’s stood idly by and done not a damn thing.

That inofitself is a sad indictment of not only Stern but also of the hierarchy itself. And whilst there are many who feel that he’s still doing a great job . I for one feel that he’s obfuscating many of his responsibilities as a custodian of the game that he’s meant to uphold including the game’s integrity Instead he’s now become the consummate politician giving the public nothing but sound bytes. And that stupid infantile smile of his!

For fu*k’s sake Stern wake up and smell the coffee you stupid oaf! Before you choke to death on your own vomit!

’cause the crap you’re giving the public no body is believing.

tophatal ………

tophat-Stern may get credit for ’saving’ the game, but how tough was it really? When he took over, Bird and Magic were entering their prime, and MJ was just getting started. I think you or I could have saved that league.

Stop overestimating yourself Rick.

Okay, you’re right Ridge. I’m no David Stern. Hell, I’d NEVER use the word ‘palaver.’

Rick O

What Stern was able to do is like all good businessman and lawyers alike is rein in all of the NBA’s corporate sponsors and make their brand all the more amenable to the public and fans alike.

What better way for us all to purring our envy over a slimy basta*rd like Stern.

What’s even more astounding is the very fact that Stern now chooses to denigrate Donaghy rather than admitting that there’s an inherent problem with the brand to a lesser extent. And then with the inconsistency of the officiating.

But afterall this only a game and not a matter of life and death. Therein really lies the dilemma!

Stern wants the fans to be enamored with the game but isn’t really prepared to do what is necessary to clean up the game’s image and the impression being created.

Tell me how gullible do we have to ve believe all of the bs coming from out of the mouth of Stern at this juncture?

tophatal …….

Something to say?
